Jack Sprat and interdisciplinary research

One man’s signal is another man’s noise. The study of perception shows that what we see
is driven by what we know. In research two different approaches will boost and suppress
different aspects of a signal in a complementary manner. This complementarity applies at
all scales of disciplinary divisions from the finest distinctions within, say, neuroscience, to
the divide between a purely aesthetic and completely hypothesis-driven appreciation of a
phenomenon.
