This is a 6 week time-lapse of my 'weaving and unweaving' installation, inspired by the story of weaver Penelope in the Odyssey; By weaving each day only to unweave again each night, Penelope is able to suspend herself in an autonomous space and time, and this was my way of weaving my own space around me, which I would then invite the public to enter.
Over the 6 weeks I created each part of the installation in response to a cultural textile item from a museum collection. I would build a part, and then undo it again in response to another item from the collection. This was the weaving an unweaving involved in the (usually hidden) process, which I filmed, in order to bridge the gap between public and private. It is the process behind the finished piece, which I wanted to emphasise as important in the work, and in weaving and women’s craft the world over.
