This is just one of over 50 endangered Green Sea Turtle rescues conducted by Deep Ecology Hawaii. These rescues were required due to the turtles getting wrapped in discarded fishing (monofilament) line. If left to their own these turtles would lose a limb in a painful and protracted amputation due to blood circulation being strangled. If the line wraps around the neck, the turtle will be strangled to death. Deep Ecology makes clear that they would never grab or harass a turtle as this is always stressful and could possibly lead to drowning the turtle of injuring yourself. The only reason Deep Ecology has ever carried out these rescues is because the injuries from fishing line are potentially life threatening.
