According to the USDA, the number of farmers’ markets in the US grew 17% in the past year to 7,175 in 2011. As of 2010, the most recent year for which figures are available, there were 300 farmers’ markets in Illinois. That puts Illinois in third place for the highest number of farmers’ markets in the country, after New York and California. One of the most-visited farmers’ markets in Illinois is located right here in Urbana. Pam Dempsey of cu-citizenaccess.org, has our story.
