Faultlines is a site-specific installation that exposes and responds to the contested waterfront and fractured bank along the East River in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Rather than projecting on or inhabiting the scarred landscape we look at highlighting the result of this natural disturbance by illuminating from below and within the existing concrete shore. The resultant glow beneath the surface creates an immersive environment that suggests the potential of metamorphic activity and a natural geologic formation. By using programmed waterproof LED strands to illuminate the cracks in the concrete, the visitor’s experience is given the illusion of a tectonic force beneath the surface reminiscent of natural fault lines. The installation can be enjoyed from the approaching street, the existing pier and from the water itself.
