RTW's GeoTech students at the Rafael Hernandez Dual Language School run for the environment at their school's GeoTech Club students STEM+ expo! Students in the club host an event each year in keeping with the Club's mantra - to save the world! For the 2012 school year, the 26 GeoTech Club student members decided to host a science expo for their school community.
Students divided into groups based on their project interests and divided up tasks leading up to the event. "Go Green!" is a recycling game designed to compliment the science fair's theme of sustainability. Students are divided into teams, given a debriefing on the local solid waste management regulations, and then let loose to collect rubbish and drop it in the appropriate bin. When all of the trash is collected, the pieces are counted (plastic bottles, cans, newspapers, ect). Points are awarded for properly placing the item, and points are taken away for improper recycling. The plastics that were collected have numbers on the bottom, indicating whether they can be recycled. Most often students did not pay attention to the type of plastic and consider to go containers recyclable along with styrofoam.
