Sue Corke & Hagen Betzwieser
12 July - 1 September 2012
Sue Corke and Hagen Betzwieser met by chance in 2008 at a bus stop in Norway. A conversation that started out then about colonising the moon at a glacier roadside continues in London today with their first solo show at EB&Flow Gallery.
In their artistic playground nothing is quite what it seems. Working for the last four years as WE COLONISED THE MOON their graphic art and installation projects have embodied a child-like wonder of the universe and the dichotomy between science-fact and science-fiction. Their work is rooted in absurdism and theatrical performance and characterised by the slogans and catchphrases of popular culture, advertising and marketing.
Sue Corke is based in London. Her practice as a printmaker combines here with German artist Hagen Betzwieser's more conceptually driven approach. Together their strong DIY attitude to production elicits candid surprise from their audience. From a futile campaign against cosmic rays, to fake moon rocks and the ballet of space maintenance, pathos and the poetic slides into farce and irony.
The future may be frightening but it is also damn entertaining.
