An extract from Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano (VII) from Cover Me Cage by Kerry Yong performed by Kerry Yong at Kings Place as part of the SARU project LOST & FOUND. Cover Me Cage is a re-creation of selected prepared piano works by John Cage, into a digital (but lo-fi) medium. Performed on a generic midi keyboard, the written ‘notes’ trigger substituted sampled sounds: recorded or electronic sounds from real and virtual sources. It’s therefore comparatively portable, quick to set up and fits on stage easily. Cover Me Cage follows the Cover Me Casio project, where other avant-garde ‘hits’ are re-worked on retro 80s Casio keyboards with the assistance of effect pedals, computer and other electronic paraphernalia.
LOST & FOUND is an ongoing project exploring a variety of approaches to the use of found, salvaged, revealed and rediscovered materials including texts, sounds, scores, images, objects, instruments and contexts in the creative arts.
The Sonci Art Research Unit is based at Oxford Brookes University.
