Over the past 10 year I have always wanted to climb Wedge Mountain. There is something about its beautiful shape and landscape that could not escape my mind. My good friend Mark Therriault also has a big dream that he shared with me 6 months back. This dream, that he is making a reality, is to climb the tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest. Over the next 9 months we will be documenting Mark’s journey to Everest. With no hesitation Mark replied to my invite to climb Wedge with a “YES”. Good friends Cory, Dave and myself would take the pleasure in introducing Mark to his first mountaineering experience. Saturday morning we hit the trail head at 9am and more or less climbed stairs with a 50 lb pack for 4 hours. This was not the easiest approach, but very rewarding as we arrived to one of the most beautiful camping spots in BC. We spent the rest of the day sorting our gear & planning our route. As the sun rested for the day we hit the pillow to get some sleep for our 3 am start for the summit. Day 2 @ 4 am we approached the bottom of the glacier. We took note that a thick layer of fog was moving in and some potential heavy weather would creep up on us. We pushed on over the glacier with caution and headed in the direction of the North East Arete. As we approached the top of the ridge line we had a moment to enjoy the view for a few minute before the thunder storm stopped us 1000 ft short of the summit. We decided that we would save the summit for another day and head back safe to camp.
