Over 3.5 million die each year from water-borne disease. That's as if the entire city of Los Angeles perished annually. Of this, 1.5 million die of diarrhoeal disease, with 58% attributable directly to unsafe water sources. Many water wells get drilled, but fail within 2 to 3 years. People aren't dying because they have no water...they are dying because the water they have is contaminated.
H2OpenDoors is a project of Rotary in Redwood City, California. We install solar-powered water purification units in third world villages while we integrate our local high school kids into the project and empower the village women to run a water economy. In 2013, we installed in Northern Thailand and Tacloban, Philippines. This year was Mexico and Guatemala. In 2015, we'll go to El Salvador, back to Mexico and we're lining up Cuba.
