A young Bangladeshi woman, whose husband is accused of cutting off her fingers after she began a college course without his permission, spoke to the BBC in December 2011 about her determination to carry on with her studies.
I was working as a roving news producer in South Asia, and during a stint in Bangladesh in December 2011, this incident became the big story in the country. We located the young woman and persuaded her to let us publicise her sad story. Domestic violence is common in South Asia, and we wanted to try and highlight, with due sensitivity, a particularly horrific example.
