This video was shot from behind our house near Allegheny Drive in Colorado Springs. We took it over the course of four days. On the fourth day, my daughter and I were running errands and watching the fire grow. She said we really needed to get it on video with some music that could express how we were feeling.
After we arrived home we headed up to the hill to shoot some video. We had no idea that we would be up there as the winds picked up to 65mph and the fire grew out of control. We caught the fast, fearsome, and frightening growth of the fire, although the wind nearly blew the camera out of my hands a few times. Toward the end we became engulfed in smoke and it was obvious that the fire was coming our way. We headed back to the house, packed up the rest of our stuff, and got out of town. We are so thankful to the firefighters, police officers, and other first responders who kept our house safe while we were evacuated.
While it brings tears to my eyes to look at the scorched mountainside every day, I am proud of the love and care our community is displaying in helping families who have been displaced by the fire. I hope that this fire will someday be but a faint memory and that our neighborhoods and forests that were destroyed will soon come back to life with all the enthusiasm that our city and our beautiful mountains deserve.
