Misguided Lights (2012)
Directed, Animated: Alexander Otto
Sound: Lawrence English, The Hunting Life
The experimental fully-cg animated short Misguided Lights was directed and animated by Alexander Otto in mid-2012. Created in 3ds Max, rendered with V-Ray and graded in AE, sound from Lawrence English – The Hunting Life.
I started to develop a concept by writing down my thoughts and ideas about enlightment or life itself, but I also had a few concepts in mind on how I would like to tell the story.
After having found the direction I started building the scenes and spent a couple of days researching about materials, style, atmosphere and animation techniques. It was also very important for me, as I had learned from past projects, to have a nice and solid workflow for rendering and importing the sequences into After Effects where I did the post production.
Concept, Analysis & Notes
Darkness, beyond ordinary physics – void shows up. Slowly rises, her journey through a visualization of her sins and feelings, about birth, death, rebirth and thoughts about humanness.
The story builds up on six fragments of enlightenment mixed with a lack of substance, which we are not able to see yet. Blend in, run away. Erotic desire lens in violence and negativity, her threatening and modern agitation extends a new set of images. Death sentence is near, certainty becomes uncertainty, it is too late to change her perception.
