“In Loving Memories” explores the idea of making a last will and testament for your digital self. It opens with two girls discussing a change in Facebook’s ‘Terms’ and conditions.’ Facebook asks this girl and through her, perhaps the viewer, to consider what they would want to happen to their Facebook profile after death.
Through this question the film also refers to the current trend of profile’s being transformed by loved ones into tribute sites. The film questions whether these tribute sites are a ‘good’ way of honoring a person’s life. It explores circumstances where a digital interface may not be the way a person wants to be ‘remembered’ and questions whether your Facebook profile really is a reflection of you?
However if you were to request your profile be removed after death, the simple disappearance of a person’s profile could be a potentially traumatic experience for others within the community.
So the question is, how do you go about removing this information in a sensitive way and in doing so, create a process involving the profile’s removal that could perhaps assist people in ‘letting go.’
