If authenticity were the key ingredient to musical success, Waylon Thornton would be king. The Lake Butler native has close to 30 self-recorded and self-released albums to his name, both as a solo act and as hard-hitting duo Waylon Thornton & The Heavy Hands, which features his wife, Meg, on drums.
Psychedelic rock, punkabilly, scuzz-blues, and traditional country are all fair game for Waylon and Meg — think The White Stripes playing with utter, complete abandon. But Thornton is no screw-it-all nihilist pounding out power jams for a drunken, drugged-out oblivion. No, like Jack White, he is a compelling, calculating character: a proud Floridian eager to go international. A motivated songwriter happy just to make his voice heard. And a truly DIY force to be reckoned with.
