July 12, 2012 - Barry X Ball creates portraits out of marble, onyx, and jade that combine the grotesque and the beautiful. Beginning his sculpture with a simple plaster cast of sitter’s head and neck Ball digitalizes the positive cast with a 3D linear scanner that then converts the digital file into a computer-controlled carving lathe that carves the portrait out of stone.
His work was recently celebrated at the 2011 Venice Biennale, and he has shown internationally including at
PS 1 Contemporary Art Center, SITE Sante Fe, the Beijing Today Art Museum, and many international
contemporary galleries and art fairs. His work is in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art,
The Norton Museum of Art, The Berlingieri Collection, The Olbricht Collection, and The Panza Collection among many others.
