In 1990, at the invitation of Peter Weibel, who then headed up the Ars Electronica Center (Linz, Austria), Steina and Woody Vasulka began organizing Eigenwelt der Apparatewelt: Pioniere der Elektronischen Kunst = Pioneers of Electronic Art, an event to be held within the 1992 Ars Electronica festival in Linz, Austria. Mainly showcasing original devices still in working order, the exhibition explored the use that artists made of such instruments when a formal vocabulary specific to video was being defined.
