The annual "Kitten of the Year" competition in Canberra, Australia, is run by Miss Kitka's House of Burlesque. Competitors choose a classic burlesque performer from the 1920s to 1960s, then pay homage to the performer by reproducing one of her (or his) routines, from the steps to the costumes. The evening is also filled with group performances and live music.
In this year's competition, I chose to pay tribute to Mamie Van Doren, a blonde bombshell actress/singer/dancer whose best years of her career were in the 1950s. Still alive and very feisty at 83, Mamie is a screen and stage legend who never quite attained the stardom she deserved.
Enjoy the original videos here: http://youtu.be/Phm9YP6ZjP4 and http://youtu.be/oNfna41Bjk0. I was nowhere near as sexy & elegant as Mamie in either film (and made a couple of major errors in "Take It Off"), but still managed to come second in the KOTY competition.
