This was my fourth trip to Uzbekistan, and each time it is different, leaving me wanting to return. Perhaps what made this journey so unique was that I was able to visit people in their homes, to experience how they live, and their gracious hospitality. I came back with so much footage that did not make it into this edit! I am putting together segments about the artisans who invited me to see how they work, up close, and I hope that you will go to my site at inter-muse.com to meet them and observe their fascinating techniques. This is a land of vibrant color and culture; when I visited the Savitsky museum in Nukus, Karakalpakstan, I saw many works by Russian Avant-Garde painters who were drawn as much to the quality of the light here, as they were seeking to avoid the "light" of soviet scrutiny. The festival itself is a kind of gateway, and would make a terrific jumping off place for a tour of the major historic cities of Samarkand, Khiva and Bukhara. Consider this, next time you feel the urge to go someplace different.
