I&I is a collaboration between Teguh Hartanto and Su Tomesen: digital photographs taken by Dutch visual artist Su Tomesen were the basis for a series of mixed media on canvas by Indonesian screen printer and painter Teguh Hartanto. I&I consisted of 25 panels in total. From 15 February till 9 March 2012 the works were exhibited in the cultural institute of the Dutch Embassy, Erasmus Huis, Jakarta.
In I&I the artists portray mixed race or multi ethnic couples like themselves, in Indonesia and especially Java. Since there are strict rules about dating and marriage in Indonesia, it is hard to do this outside your tribe / ethnicity / community. But of course it happens, out of love and with freedom in mind. Artist statement: Multi-ethnicity is part of the concept of Indonesia: "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika". In our opinion this principle should have consequences for the practice. Without mixing it is hard to make the concept work.
