'Dominion', CGI Digital Animation - NTSC Format DVD Projection, dimensions variable- Looped 4mins, 2008
‘Dominion’ is inspired by an ongoing event in East Java, Indonesia, where Gas Drillers have triggered an eruption of mud that is rapidly changing the hard earth and foundations. I was fascinated by the way the gas seemed to be transmogrifying the landscape - slowly turning it to liquid and in turn the villages were being enveloped within the engulfing mud.
The animation starts at ground level, a mask layer is painted onto the floor of the gallery that holds the projection in situ. The floor then begins to ripple and morph and a sense of Trompe l'oeil is created to suck the viewer into the rupture. Through the transmogrification of the surface of the floor I want to create a dizzying sense of displacement where the animated matter is nuanced by the organic mass-stuff of this world.
