In Reassembly, I explore the process of taxidermy of deerheads. My interview subject is Steve Lies, who is a local taxidermist in the Southern Illinois region, who has done taxidermy for over 10 years. Most people are disturbed by the idea of taxidermy; they think it’s inhumane or disgusting. To taxidermist Steve Lies’, taxidermy involves the recreation of the memory of a hunt. He believes that taxidermy should look clean and like how it did when it was in the woods; tranquil and serene. Lies takes the deer hide, mounts it on the deer form, and brings the deer back to an imitation of life.
