Canterbury & District Model Engineers Open Day
August 12th 2012, Sturry, near Canterbury, Kent, UK
Steam trains aren't really my thing but it was a lovely day, it was nearby and it was free. Besides, my friend Alan Plumb is a member and he invited me for the day. Here's just a couple of minutes of my impression of an hour or so at the event. What you can't get from this video is the smell of steam, of coal, of oil and of the dark smoke of the traction engines, and their puffing and panting noises too. The music comes from a steam driven pipe organ at the rally.
The smells of the rally brought back memories of the days in the post-war period when I did train spotting as a schoolboy in and crossed out the train numbers in my little Ian Allan trainspotter's book.mI played on the railway lines too, naughty I know, and I used 4-6-2 50 ton monster locomotives or little shunters to squash halfpennies into penny size discs.
