Olympian Phiona Mutesi has set a record by becoming the first female player to win the open category of the National Junior Chess Championship! The event was held August 11-12, 2012.
16 year-old Mutesi defied the odds by competing against the boys, only to outwit them with a total of 6 points out of a possible 7. To win the event, Mutesi beat Joel Emojong, Richard Tugume, Kumar Hernanth, Benjamin Mukumbya, Kumar Tarrun and Abdul Ssetyabule. She only lost to Richard Buyinza.
