Many good church-goers realize that their knowledge of their own tradition is a little sketchy. Sunday School and confirmation classes seem distant, Sunday readings and sermons a bit hit-and-miss. Deepening Roots offers a chance to sink roots more deeply into the tradition – to explore the depths of the Judeo-Christian heritage, grow a clearer sense of God, and begin to think theologically about life and the world around.
Deepening Roots is based on recent trends in biblical studies that parallel literary studies, encouraging reading scripture as story, and considering texts in terms of the canon – when this book was collected, what was considered important to this community and why?
The Deepening Roots course began at Spirit of the Wilderness Episcopal Church in Grand Marais. With funding from Roanridge Trust, the course is now being offered in the East and West Metro areas and in Duluth.
