"Memory Study" expresses my complicated feelings about memory and embodiment, particularly in relation to violence and forms of self-harm. Various subjects are shown with red string wrapped around their eyes. This string is in one way the entanglement of memory, whose red color signifies memory’s severity, evoking blood, bruising, and physical violence. In dispersed scenes throughout the film, a subject lays on the forest ground in a dream-like haze while their face is pushed and pulled by hands whose full bodies remain off screen. The hands at times cover the face, suggesting the impossible differentiation between individual and collective identity. I capture footage of scars of a former lover from cutting himself, a habit to which I also once turned as a means of coping with living with painful memories.
