Short feature on comedian and activist Dick Gregory. In the 1950's while a college track star he lead the integration of a historical theater in Southern Illinois. Gregory went on to become a central figure in the civil rights movement, using comedy, blunt honest and courage to motivate positive change.
In 2009 Dick Gregory did an interview with the PBS affiliate in Southern Illinois to tell his story about integrating the theater. I was the assistant production coordinator at the station and when I found out Gregory was our guest I drafted a proposal for the executive producer to land an opportunity to interview the legendary comedian and activist. From here I edited the original 1 hour program and did additional research to create a demonstation piece that showcased this piece of history.
