Our journey through the Gospel of John has taken us through the first eleven chapters. We have studied the Glory of Jesus detailing the glories of the Word, Wine, Wind, Well, Work, Wonders, Water and Witness. As we continue our study through the Gospel of John, I am preaching a series of messages about The Glory of the Way. In John chapter fourteen, Jesus declared that he was “the way, the truth and the life.” The focus of our learning through the remaining chapters of John will demonstrate that Jesus is indeed the way to life.
Over the past few weeks, I have preached three sermons entitled, Jesus the Sight for Life, Jesus the Shepherd of Life and Jesus the Source of Life. Today’s message is from chapter twelve, and we will see the glory of Jesus in the sermon, Jesus the Standard of Life. In this chapter, Jesus is anointed by Mary and then makes His way to Jerusalem for the triumphal entry. Upon His arrival, the Greeks come to the disciples desiring to see Jesus. It is at that moment that Jesus begins to present Himself as the Standard to be lifted up that men might be drawn unto Him. Jesus gives an illustration about the corn of wheat that must die to bring forth much fruit. He continues by presenting Himself as the light in who men must believe to escape darkness.
In all of this discourse, Jesus was pointing men to the Father, and the Father was pointing the Sheep to their Shepherd who would give His life for the Sheep. Jesus glorified the Father, and the Father gave the Son to reconcile humanity back to Him. He was lifted up as the perfect Standard of righteousness, holiness and grace to save them that are lost. Oh the unspeakable gift of God!
