Opening Reception and Book Release

Hope to see you at the opening!
Inspired by Salvador Dalí's interpretation of Diego Velázquez's renowned painting Las Meninas, El Vacío is an exploration of darkness and ephemerality. At the project's core is a series of photographs taken by Gogy on his BlackBerry, a tool well-suited for transient moments.
Components of the project include a book published by Dashwood Books, a custom scented candle in partnership with Joya Studio, a website developed by Jonathan Vingiano of digital agency OKFocus, and a soundtrack produced by Physical Therapy.
Nikolai Rose and Gogy collaborated to design a book of the images and create an immersive installation that embodies the El Vacío experience. The site-specific installation combines all mediums of the project (photography, video, audio, and scent) to create an intoxicating world. Fabric hangs from the ceiling in layers, filtering light from projectors, forming a fluid canvas for Gogy's images. The soundtrack and scent of the candles draw visitors further in. The book is an extension of the experience and will be released at the opening reception.
El Vacío has had successful openings at Just Another Space, Tokyo in October 2011 and The Wayward Gallery, London in November 2011.
Dazed Digital has called El Vacío "a complete immersion into a world of seduction, euphoria, danger, treachery, and beauty," and remarks that Gogy and Nikolai Rose "awaken our senses in this surreal, intoxicating experience," and "take us away from the grounded and physical world to a place where nothing is definite, a void."
Gogy is a New York City based artist and photographer. His first self-published photography book, LIGHTTIME, was released in 2010. He also creates video and photographic content for publications such as Richardson, i-D, and Huge Magazine (gogy.me).
