K2 Big mountain Chill Series - Mt Olympus
First day of the Chill Series at Mt Olympus did not disappoint. While the snow conditions on the venue ‘Demolition’ were less than powdery, I’m talking crushed ice cube death cookies, the atmosphere as usual was full of merriment.
Cassie found herself in a less than enjoyable predicament, sitting stoically at the bottom of the venue for 4 hours, filming the event. She also had an interesting altercation with a one of the rope tows, in which her lip was split open by a nut cracker. Since then Cassie has lost all faith in her nutcracker-riding abilities. She is currently attending rope tow rehab.
Despite some early morning cloud and a congregation of fog the first day of Chill went off without a hitch. Competitors found themselves faced with all kinds of challenges including flat light, hectic run outs and unforgiving snow but that did not stop them sending it.
As usual there were many thrills and spills. Some exceptional cases included Sam Lee, B Devine, Tom Brownlee and Cam McDermid who successfully stomped a 360 to rock landing. The Euro skiing contingent were out in force with Arnaud Lesueur stomping his line for breakfast and finishing it of with a tasty backflip for the win. Local Ruari McFarlane billy goated his way into first place in the men’s snowboard division, followed quickly by Kiwi Scott Heale also our current housemate down at Glenthorne Station.
In the women, Tess Carney took out the snowboarding with a nice, gnarly line down the main ridge while Nat Segal stole top honors in the ski women.
Day 2 is looking to be a quite a treat, the competitors will be ripping down some of the main chutes overlooking the Playground of the Gods. The snow while still a little firm is untracked and ready for the taking!
