Trees
by Joyce Kilmer
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed
Against the earth’s sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain,
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.

Editorial:

Kilmer was killed in combat in WWI, as you may know.
Because of bombardments nothing of the battlefield was left except mud and corpses.
Put yourself in that situation of shell shock and nothingness.
No trees existed on the field of battle.
Kilmer seemed to miss all that he had known.
The longing to even see a tree must give you the idea of his predicament.
I mean, why not right a poem about women?
He speaks of the tree almost humanlike, tall, with it's branches praying as they reach for the heavens.
Total imagination on his part.
Brilliant to say the least:
He speaks of life living in the trees (robins).
He pretty much says he is nothing but a fool writing a poem.
He ends it by saying only God can make a tree.
I believe this 'tree' is a metaphor for all he used to know in beauty.
If you know anything about the First World War, you will understand.
