This project is part of a Bachelor dissertation at the Time-Based Media Department of Fachhochschule Mainz, supervised by Prof. Anja Stöffler. It is a music video for the song ‘Arrow’ by Canadian indie/rock band Tegan and Sara, released on their album Sainthood.
The video is not intended for commercial use and is in no way to be seen as an official music video; it is merely sample work for my portfolio. Naturally, the copyright of the song remains with the band, as indicated clearly in the video’s credits.
Based on a mythological background, the video tells the story of a young woman that is determined to reach a goal but ultimately fails. The story parallels the song’s narrative, mirroring the impulsive nature of the music in the characters.
In order to reflect the song two figures have been developed, that take the positions of the singer (or monologue leader) and their unknown dialog partner (the receiver). The leading character is an Amazon called Maya. As singer, she addresses a character that acts from a hidden perspective. This character can be linked to the symbol of the arrow: the Greek goddess Artemis. Artemis is the goddess of the hunt, wild animals, and protector of women and children.
