The Iguana Hunter. Short film by Guillermo Asensio.
Inspired by a real macro-development plan to turn the Spanish desert of Monegros into a Las Vegas style resort. The Iguana Hunter is a story about a dreamy character who retreats into this still unspoilt and enigmatic landscape only to find his moment of fantasy give way to a terrible reality.
"For me, the location was the starting point, and, ultimately, the defining element of the short. I’ve passed by the Monegros desert many times since I was a child, often on visits to see my mother’s relatives who live in the area, and I’ve always been fascinated by the emptiness and string of emblematic bulls that proudly mark the terrain.
Over time, these bulls, which are the remains of an old advertising campaign for brandy, have become a symbol of a macho and fervently patriotic Spain. For me, the bull embodies the darker side of the Spanish character. An extreme devotion to territory contrasts sharply with a total disregard for the environment and our natural resources. It’s depressing to see so many parts of Spain completely destroyed by such unsustainable development."
