"A two-kilometre-high spiral staircase… A torment. A joke. Impossible. Absurd." swooned Procycling magazine of the Muro di Sormano, not skimping on rhetoric, but accurately describing the awful reality lurking in the verdant peaks above Lake Como.
With these words Daniel Friebe starts to describe the climb of the Muro di Sormano, and everything is written there is true!!!
Ridden by Il Lombardia (one of the five monument classics of cycling along with Sanremo, Flanders, Roubaix and Liege) in three consecutive editions from 1960 to 1962, the Muro was abandoned by the race because of his steepness. It was not a joke that many riders prefers to push their bike rather than pedal!!!
The road was also left to itself because a new big road was constructed to arrive at the Colma di Sormano, but this new road is 2.5 km longer than the Muro, which in 2 km takes you from 820 m to 1124 m of the Colma, average gradient of 15% with steepest points of 24%, an incredible tough climb!!!
When in 2006 the narrow road of the Muro was restored they painted on the asphalt every meter of altitude gained, the famous sentences of the heroic riders that rode that climb and also the time splits of the first ten riders passed on the top in the three edition of Lombardy Tour!!!
This year the organizers decided that the Muro must return on the route of Lombardy Tour, even if far from the arrival in Lecco, it will not decide who'll win but certainly it will decide who'll not win!!!
