Jamar Criswell rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, but Russellville held off Morrilton, 20-12, in the football season opener for both schools Thursday night. The Cyclones built a 14-0 lead before the Devil Dogs would find the endzone with a one-yard run on a quarterback keeper by Toney Hawkins on the final play of the first half. An third-quarter interception by LaQuanta Canady would set up the Devil Dogs' other touchdown, a nine-yard run by Criswell that earned the Dixon Family Dental Big Smile Play of the Game. But it was not enough as the Cyclones held on for the eight-point win, avenging a 28-point loss to the Devil Dogs last year. Hawkins finished with 55 yards rushing and 134 yards passing with two interceptions in his first start at quarterback. In addition to his big night rushing, Criswell accumulated the most receiving yards on the team with 40 yards on two catches. Montrell Hood had four receptions for 39 yards. Rashad Criswell had two catches for 37 yards and Aaron Hill caught one pass for 12 yards. The Devil Dogs have now lost nine of their last 11 games against Russellville. Morrilton welcomes Prairie Grove to Devil Dog Stadium for the team's home opener next Friday, the first of three consecutive home games for the Devil Dogs.
