My friend and fellow filmmaker Gabriel Fleming and I saw Peter Jackson’s King Kong in a nearly empty theater in 2005. Despite not particularly liking the movie or feeling very engaged with the characters, we both sobbed heavily when the CGI gorilla is shot to death and falls from the Empire State Building. Neither of us could account for this odd and sudden emotional response. The experience lingered for both of us. In 2012 we reunited via skype (him in LA and me in New York) to perform a crude reenactment of the scene shot for shot. We directed each other using whatever costumes and props were on hand. The video shows both channels (actor and viewer) throughout.
