Written by myself and Laurence Jones, based on an initial idea of Laurence's that had been knocking about for at least a year, LISTEN marks my first foray into directing shorts with the support of a full crew. Thanks to the tireless production work of Victor Rios, we were able to put together an excellent team of talented individuals – including a four-people-strong make-up department – who all gave up their time and expertise to bring this project to life.
LISTEN as a fully realised idea was born, as many such things are, in a pub; Laurence and I sat down with a notepad and a pint and sketched out the story. After a few Celtx drafts Dropboxed back and forth – one of which included my last-minute addition of the tape recorder motif – we arrived at a workable final draft. A casual chat with Victor a few days later brought him on board, and within days he had secured a small crew and a series of shooting locations.
The cast was built from familiar faces. I'd known Sophie Couch since working with her at the National Youth Film Academy (NYFA) on the film I wrote and scored, MONDAY, where she was drafted into our team and I wrote a few lines for her. Luke Thomas worked with me on our Sci-Fi London Film Festival 48-Hour Film Competition entry INCONSISTENT RESULTS, where I directed him to do a lot of silly things. MJ Ashton is another NYFA alum, featured in the short WALK OF SHAME – she recently played R. P. McMurphy in her drama school end-of-year production of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
We are currently in post-production, with an eye on September for completion. This film is produced in association with Between Shots.
