This year marked the debut of alto saxophonist and composer David Binney’s quartet at the 33rd Detroit Jazz Festival, one of the largest free jazz festivals in North America. David played music from his latest critically-acclaimed Mythology Records release, “Graylen Epicenter.” The disc showcases David’s more adventurous composition writing as well as features some of jazz finest musicians on the scene ranging from saxophonist Chris Potter, vocalist Gretchen Parlato, drummer Brian Blade, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, and guitarist Wayne Krantz.
For close to three decades, David has been one of the most important musicians in his generation to continue to the great learned and musical direction of jazz music. Some of David’s contemporaries include Adam Rogers, Mark Turner, Bill Frisell, Donny McCaslin, and Chris Potter. He’s also one of the most in-demand session musicians as well as instructors in New York City who’s also developed a strong base overseas as a bone-fide leader packing venues and festivals year-round.
The southern California native found is voice on the saxophone as a teenager and decided to pursue music by the time he graduated high school. David then packed up and moved to New York City where he studied under saxophone greats Dave Liebman and George Coleman. David’s debut recording “End Game” was hailed as one of 1990’s top jazz recordings of that year and featured Lonnie Plaxico, Edward Simon, Adam Rodgers, and Marvin Smith. The album was financed through proceeds through a NEA grant he received in 1989.
During his time as a leader he co-founded two jazz groups, Lost Tribe and Lan Xang, in which showcased David’s versatile musical styles as well as gift as a composer.
For well over a decade David has been successful running his record label Mythology Records where he’s stepped up his game as not only a composer/bandleader, but, also a producer as well as talent scout. His latest release “Graylen Epicenter” is one of David’s successful projects and just recently produced saxophonist Donny McCaslin’s latest release “Casting for Gravity.”
Currently, David is on tour and when he’s not on the road, he hosts and performs at the 55 Bar in New York City as part of his residency each week. For information on his upcoming tour dates or to order music from his Mythology Records label, please visit him online at davidbinney.com.
