An autobiographical account of a woman sucked into a melancholic state of mind and her imploded battle of suffering and Resurrection.
Initially I was inspired by the aesthetic and symbolism of the painting ‘Proserpine’ by Dante Gabriel Rossetti whom depicted the Goddess of the underworld in Classical Mythology.
In the classical myth, Proserpine was kidnapped by Pluto, the god of the underworld, to be his wife. She begged to be returned to Earth, but because she had eaten some pomegranate seeds Pluto confined her to his kingdom for half of each year. She is shown eating a pomegranate which symbolises captivity.
In response to this I imagined a ‘Proserpine’ of the future. Her mental health deteriorates as her negative being becomes not of this world, on another Planet. She summons her internal power only to discover she has the positive potential to overcome her captive situation.
