Ballyhoura is the self-styled 'largest trail centre in Ireland' with 150km of trails on offer altho with only one other car in the car park when I turned up you wouldn't have thought that was the case.
As I was on my own and it was raining as well as having dropped off the wife and kids and in-laws in Killarney I decided to ride the shorter Mountrussell loop which is graded difficult.
At 17km or 12 miles according to my computer the trail comprised of hard packed trails with some long sections of woodwork covering the boggier sections hidden deep in forest.
There were a few fireroad climbs but nothing difficult and no really long challenging descents just mile after mile of singletrack with a few half-hearted rock gardens thrown in for good measure.
It would have been great to try one of the longer trails but I was on a tight schedule and headed back to Killarney for the family pick-up.
Well worth a visit if you are in the area.
