Launched by our Board of Directors in early March 2020 with a seed commitment of $500,000, the Brooklyn COVID-19 Response Fund has since become the largest community-supported emergency response in our history. In the first phase of the Fund, which concluded in July, we distributed $3.3 million through 420 grants to grassroots organizations across our borough.
This Fall, we are embarking on Phase 2 of the Fund, beginning with an extensive community engagement process: Brooklyn Insights 2020. This will enable us to learn from—and partner with—leaders and residents in communities of color, in order to identify and invest in community-led strategies that address injustice through advocacy and organizing, as well as direct relief for urgent needs exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.
