With an epic powder day down the blood is still pumping!
Ill Never Forget Ohao, Put it on the places to ski list.
The day started the night before rocking up to the Lodge at 7.30pm with dinner and drinks being served on the table, Were talking 3 course meal, We met up with the Team from BaseNZ a Ski shop from Wanaka and enjoyed a few games around the dinner table before retreating to bed.
Accommodation suits a riders lifestyle perfect shared bunked rooms for budget to more indulgent luxury style on offer. The lodge host a bar a lounge a dinner room, open fireplace and hot tubs all over looking Lake Ohau. Sweet View to wake up too.
We wake the next morning, Yes The mountain is open after being closed for 5 day we rush in breakfast which consist of a full cooked menu and cereal with a variety of poached fruits, tea, coffee and juice.
Were Full and ready to go jumping in Jucy we make the first mistake to take her up the Hill. We put the chains on as recommended but no. Fail… We slide of the edge into the ditch on the good side of the road cutting. We wait 5 mins before were rescued and before long were shredding Pow with no crowds.
The one chair lift takes you up to open bowls in our case windblown and fresh powder with some cautious navigating we were shredding with face shots and laughter as the team shred the hill till lunchtime.
The weather came in with white out conditions lasting about an hour before the sun claiming the territory again and we were back on the hill carving the same lines as earlier this morning as all the tracks were filled in.
OMG An amazing day.
The drama continued as high winds picked up making the road trip home less than fun, poor old jucy didn’t like it so much , with chains on rear wheels we still had no grip as we went into our second slide for the day stopping just before the drop off on the edge of the road,
A quick recovery and were back in low gear driving ever so cautious, Our Second spill was not that nice the brakes locked the wheels and we were on a path we had no control over. A scary moment, we were pretty scared we decided to have out seatbelt of as if the van went over the edge we would just jump up the door. Imagine That! Ouch.
Pumping the breaks their was no recovery we were sliding, I managed to turn the van into the hill and crash into the wall. Seemed like a good option rather than becoming James bond and G I Jane
Hearts beating were ok,
We ended up getting the mountain dudes to help us recover the van and assist us down the icy roads we made it back safe and realized perhaps not the best journey for a Campervan.
Chains are a must have. Ohau can fit and supply your car/van with great chains highly recommended, you don’t want this happening to you.
I’m definitely hitching. a ride with 4x4 from the bottom is the way to go. all the crew here are so friendly you will have no problems getting a ride.
Lake Ohau is in the Mackenzie High Country is cradled between the Ohau Range to the west in the Main Divide and the Ben Ohau range to the east. In summer it is endowed with fine weather and long daylight hours and in winter with reliable snow.
We just scored so much Pow, fresh lines all day we decided to stay another night.
After our efforts driving we jumped into the hot tub as it started to snow, What a day, Followed by another 3 course dinner its time for bed!
Come to Ohao you will love it.
