The „Tree Workers Case“ is the biggest case of labour exploitation in Europe to be exposed in the last twenty years. At least 2,000 workers, mainly from Vietnam, but also from Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovakia and the Ukraine became victims of exploitation in the state forest of Czech Republic in the last three years.
It is always the same names and dubious employment agencies that keep surfacing in this case. Police, ministries and other authorities consider themselves incompetent, remain passive. However, a group of people – lawyers and members of NGOs in Prague – have joined forces to investigate this case, in order to put those responsible on trial, and to have the forest workers compensated.
One of the workers is Pham Hung Long from Vietnam, who has been living in the Czech Republic for the last three years. Mr Long had dreamed up a European paradise, but he never got there. The documentary THE TREE WORKERS CASE, directed by Daniela Agostini and produced by the company INTER/AKTION, is based on the tragic story of Mr Long – a victim of an incredible case of labour exploitation in the heart of Europe – and of the three Prague lawyers, human rights activists and NGOs who set out to fight for him and other exploited workers. The film reveals the indifference of the relevant national authorities and big forestry companies as well as of their unwillingness to expose and investigate this crime or the business ties facilitating such exploitation.
