Darren Francis Mcmanus
Project Title: COSMOSIS
Darren Mcmanus is an artist who focuses on the creation of a mythic cosmology, developed through imagery from sacred, scientific, and cultural systems. The foundation of Mcmanus’ paintings is a micro versus macro framework, containing both recognizable and original imagery, manipulated to create new relationships and meaning.
By composing paintings that lack any visible brush stroke or identity of the artist’s hand, Mcmanus’ work is in constant dialogue with the viewer. Viewers may question the work and the basis of it’s creation, wondering how it is made: by machine, digital means, or hand? The aesthetic of the work creates a dialogue with the viewers based on curiosity and introspection, which leads to contemplation of spirituality and the sublime.
Mcmanus is going to take these concepts to the Solo(s) Project House space during the summer residency program, as he transforms the gallery walls into a cosmic temple. To achieve this, he will be merging two of his painting styles from his existing “Rose Window” and “Spiritus”.
[Rose Window] Elaborate under-painting of symbolism and iconography from different cultures, divination systems, and occult orders such as pictograms and freemasonry from the Mayan, Sumerian, and Hopi civilizations.
[Spiritus] As the artist paints layers of geometric patterns executed in transparent acrylic paint.
Viewers will be able to explore this exhibition while wearing micro-optic eyeglasses to witness both the walls and paintings project into physical space. Being inside a gallery, viewers are constantly reminded that they are within the confines of public architecture, but by using 3D technology, it is the artist’s intent to rid the architectural constraints and transform the space in to the work itself. By creating a holographic world which breaks the boundaries between the painting and the wall itself, the work will become permeable and in constant flux. This 3D dynamic facilitates an internal, meditative dialogue between work and viewer about beauty, mystery, and notions of the sublime.
About SPH Summer Residency Program:
Solo(s) Project House has closed down it’s gallery, split it in half and handed it over to two artists for our second annual summer residency project. The two selected artists have been GIVEN the space as a studio for two months and will work throughout the months of July and August. They will produce two separate solo projects that will open to the public with a reception on Friday, September 14th, from 7:00 to 11:00 P.M. The exhibition will live from September 14 - October 15th, and also be featured during the Newark Open Doors Tour, October 5th - 7th.
