OneBeat is a new international cultural exchange by the U.S. Department of State that celebrates the transformative power of the arts through the creation of original, inventive music, and people-to-people diplomacy. In September 2012, 32 musicians (ages 19-35) from around the world will come together in the U.S. for four weeks to collaboratively write, produce, and perform new music. The group will also lead engagement events with local youth, and develop strategies for using music to make a positive impact on our local and global communities.

One BeatSM is an initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, administered by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation. OneBeat builds on Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton’s vision of “smart power” diplomacy. It embraces the use of a full range of diplomatic tools, including music, to bring people, especially youth, together for greater understanding.

Atlantic Center for the Arts (ACA) is the residency site for the first two weeks of OneBeat and will house the first OneBeat showcase performances. ACA is a nonprofit, interdisciplinary artists’ community and arts education facility dedicated to promoting artistic excellence by providing talented artists an opportunity to work and collaborate with some of the world’s most distinguished contemporary artists. During the residency, Fellows will form new genre-bending ensembles, experiment with various compositional models, record in state of the art studios, and dream up innovative, site-specific music projects for spaces along the tour route along the east coast of the US.
