Marine biologist Marjolaine Matabos describes her studies of benthic (seafloor) ecosystems via web-connected digital camera. The camera was positioned at a depth of 90 m in Saanich Inlet off the east coast of British Columbia's Vancouver Island and connected to the VENUS Coastal Observatory. Here, Marjolaine was able to remotely observe the activities and interactions of fish, squat lobsters and other organisms. Collaboration with Italian researchers bore additional fruit as automated computer detection algorithms were developed to help spot squat lobsters. The algorithms could potentially support this kind of research by automatically sifting through many thousands of images to identify frames of interest.
