Pardon the wind and camera noise, turn up your volume and listen closely! As the sun comes up, bull elk start bugling back and forth across the hillside. This is their "love call" to cows and "bring it challenges" to other bulls. Smaller and younger bulls have a higher pitched bugle, bigger bulls have a deeper voice. Often they grunt, as well, but it's very hard to hear that in this video. Panama nickers just as one bull starts to bugle and I try to hush him... he's spotted Vernon and Daniel on the ledge above me. Below me are Johnny and Megan and Sam, the dog, also listening to the chorus of bugles. Daniel rides down to talk to me, and we try to spot the elk. As the sun rose, we could see them scattered in many of the sagebrush openings. They were very hard to spot with the sun in our eyes. There are at least 4 or 5 bulls talking back and forth! It was a magical time on the Bar C!
