LEADED - MPG GOLDEN EAGLE RESEARCH

MPG Ranch

Lead exposure threatens scavengers around the world. In Montana's Bitterroot Valley, Raptor Research Institute and MPG Ranch partnered to study lead exposure in golden eagles. Between 2011 and 2018, they caught 91 golden eagles and observed the highest prevalence of elevated blood lead levels ever recorded for the species. The sample included migratory and nonmigratory birds, which suggests that hunting with lead ammunition in winter habitats can affect golden eagles that summer in vastly different regions with little human presence. This study was published in the Journal of Wildlife Management and can be found at: https://wildlife.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jwmg.21980
