Nallathanniya is typical of a poor tea village. Sometimes mothers work their fingers raw picking tea leaves for 10-12 hours a day, and fathers work the same hours in the nearby warehouse where the tea is dried and processed. Maybe they are paid $1 or $1.50 per day.
As a result, conditions in the village can be desperate. Clean water can be non-existent. Illness can be great. Food can be sparse from lack of income, and children can be uneducated because parents cannot afford even the smallest fees for school uniforms and books.
