Imagine an old abandoned tire shop with numerous garage doors lining the front and back, with an oil caked cement floor and car lifts installed throughout. What could such an awkwardly designed, specific building be other than a place to service cars? Good question. Leave it up Indy non-profit, Big Car to answer that. Through
imagination and hard work they reclaimed an old Firestone Tire Center in front of Lafayette Square Mall on Indy’s west side. Today the once abandoned building is the Service Center for Culture and Community — with a community garden, creativity lab, lending library, neighborhood stories video screening room, large-scale exhibition and performance space.
Key word, community garden, that is what lead us to the west side to talk to the Service Center garden team and see what it take to grow food in front of a old tire shop. To learn more check out Craftedspoon’s latest video on gardening and using your imagination.
